Aliens at the Local Pool

One day a 7 year old boy named Ulysses Francesco O’Malley was excited to ask his mother to go to their local pool. It was very crowded when they got there. He was astounded to see that the water seemed to be moving an awful lot without much wind. In fact, it looked like someone was swimming in it. His favorite thing there was the water slide, which had a sign that said, “Closed due to radiation.” He had no idea, of course, what “radiation” meant. In the line for the snack bar, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a clearing in the forest behind the pool. When he went to examine it, he saw a very large, old crumbled disk. It looked like a spaceship. He decided to look a little bit closer. In it he found a pair of what looked like 3-d goggles. He put them on. Then he looked up and saw a big, red-capped mushroom looking thing. It started talking in a very deep voice.

It said, “We have come from a different world. We swam through oceans and lakes to find a small enough body of water. You are Ulysses, are you not? There was a legend about you. Ulysses will someday come to save us.”

“How can I save you?” asked Ulysses.

The alien replied, “You must take us back to the planet Mushroomia.”

Ulysses said, “Wait one moment.”

Then he dashed back to his mom. He told her about the aliens, the spaceship, and the goggles. She said, “You must have exaggerated that story. And what is that on your head?”

He realized he forgot to take off the goggles. He looked at the pool. Suddenly he saw hundreds of red mushroom things scattered around the pool area. They were emitting waves of radiation. He stared at them and they stared back. He realized this was their only chance to go back to Mushroomia. He ran back to the clearing. The alien noticed him. It said, “Do you want to know more about us?”

“Yes,” replied Ulysses.

“We are the Mushroom people. We’re from the planet Mushroomia. We are invisible to the naked eye without the glasses. Our species is endangered. Many humans have noticed our spaceship, but you are different than the ordinary humans. They usually run or call the police,” replied the alien.

“How can I help you? I’m just a kid,” said Ulysses.

“You have to reboot our spaceship.”

“How?” asked Ulysses.

“It runs on Uranium. You can get that in Area 51,” responded the alien.

“Where’s that?” Ulysses asked.

The alien replied, “Nevada.”

“Oh,” said Ulysses. He ran back to his mom and asked her if they could go to Nevada.
